Breaking News: Uche Ogah is the new Abia governor

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a certificate of return to Uche Ogah as the new governor of Abia state.

Ogah, the candidate who placed second at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Abi state governorship primary in 2015 suddenly finds himself on the brink of becoming governor, following Monday’s judgement of a federal high court sitting in Abuja that Okezie Ikpeazu, the party’s candidate and winner of the governorship election, was not qualified to hold the office.

[ads-post]

Justice Okon Abang, giving judgment on a suit filed by Ogah, agreed with the plaintiff that Ikpeazu evaded tax prior to his election, and as such was‎ not qualified to hold an elective office.

He ordered the removal of Ikpeazu and also ordered Abang also ordered INEC to withdraw the certificate of return it issued to Ikpeazu‎, and re-award it to Ogah, who had received 103 votes to Ikpeazu’s 487 at the primary election.

The electoral body complied with the order on Thursday.

This is the latest in a series of legal battles Ikpeazu has faced.

His election was previously challenged by Alex Otti, the candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance‎ (APGA) in the April 2015 governorship election.

Although an election petition‎ tribunal upheld his election, the appeal sacked him. However, the supreme court returned him as governor.

Ikpeazu, who has since appealed against the order of the court, earlier urged his supporters not to panic because he “remains the governor of the state according to law”.

Attorney-general of the federation slaps the Senate again

Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), on Thursday, failed to appear before the senate committee on judiciary, human rights and legal matters — an action the upper chamber dubbed “a slap in the face”.

This is the second time he has failed to honour the invitation of the senate over a charge of forgery he filed against Bukola Saraki, senate president, and Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate president, at an Abuja high court.

Although he sent a representative, the committee did not give him the audience.

[ads-post]

David Umaru, chairman of the committee, expressed displeasure over Malami’s action, saying:

“THE PURPOSE OF THIS HEARING WAS TO DEFEND NIGERIA’S DEMOCRACY BUT THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL HAS FAULTED THE INVITATION OF THE SENATE AGAIN.”

Also speaking, a member of the committee, Chukwuka Utazi, described the action of the AGF as a slap in the face of the senate.

“This is a slap in the face of the senate as the AGF has refused to appear before the committee after being summoned,” he said.

“WE JUST WANT TO ASK THE AGF A FEW QUESTIONS TO CLARIFY ALL THESE ISSUES, BUT HE HAS FAILED TO RESPOND TO OUR INVITATION.”

MTN Nigeria set to deploy 4G LTE internet

MTN pays the first instalment of fine: MTN Nigeria has paid N30 billion to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), its first payment towards the settlement of  N330 billion fine, MTN Nigeria CEO Ferdi Moolman said on Wednesday. The total fine equates $1.7 billion.

In October last year, the company was fined $5.2 billion which was subsequently reduced .The fine is for missing a deadline to disconnect 5.1 million unregistered subscribers.

Moolman said the payment was in addition to a payment of N50 billion ($250m) made in “good faith” in February. This means MTN has to date paid N80 billion ($282.25million).

[ads-post]

Meanwhile, the company said it has won a 10-year frequency spectrum licence for the 2.6GHz band at auction. The licence will be used to deploy super fast, long-term evolution wireless networks.

Moolman said MTN Nigeria subscribers could expect distinct improvements in browsing speed, quality, and experience. “This means that they will have fast access to high definition video streaming, as well as conferencing and calling, lag-free music streaming, and improved data uploads and downloads,” he said in a statement.

He said MTN paid N18.96 billion to the NCC for the licence. According to MTN, the NCC has described this spectrum as a “significant trigger for the abroadband revolution that will unlock benefits such as greater coverage, access, affordability, and innovation, with the customer at the centre of these gains.”

MTN will increase its capital expenditure in Nigeria in 2017, substantially as it invests R11.1 billion in upgrading and expanding its wireless and fixed-line network in that country.

The award comes after MTN said earlier this month that it would more than double its spending in Nigeria in the current fiscal year after agreeing to pay a heavily reduced fine of $1.7 billion for missing a deadline to deactivate more than 5 million unregistered SIM cards used on its Nigerian network.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had earlier announced that MTN had emerged as the sole approved bidder for the new licence,MTN said in a statement.

“With the 2.6 GHz band, we expect to roll out and provide the full range of LTE (Long Term Evolution mobile broadband) services to Nigerians, empowering Nigeria with the latest mobile broadband technology,” saidMTN Nigeria Chief Executive Ferdi Moolman.

“This licence acquisition further demonstrates MTN‘s abiding faith in the future of Nigeria and the resilience of the Nigerian economy.”

MTN is the largest mobile phone operator in Nigeria with 57 million subscribers, and the country accounts for about a third of its revenues.

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja today Wednesday sacked Ali Modu Sheriff as Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.

[ads-post]

In the current threat by the group, signed by one General Don Wannie, the militants threatened to attack some government and oil facilities in Imo state.

According to Vanguard, the group fumed that oil producing communities have nothing to show for the many years of oil exploration and exploitation.

We have been neglected and abandoned. No electricity. No tarred roads. No drinking water. No hospital. No youth employment or empowerment.  We shall destroy everything in Imo State that was built with our oil money,” NDRS stated.

The group which claimed responsibility for an attack on a facility operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company in Awarra, Ohaji/Egbema local council area of the state promised to inflict maximum damage to oil facilities if Ohaji/Egbema communities are not given due benefits from their oil resource.

The militants equally promised an imminent attack on the facilities of Waltersmith Petroleum Oil Limited.

NDRS said:

We will let them know that the security which they claim to have is insufficient. So, they should go and hire more because we are coming to attack them any moment from now.”

Buhari very angry with CBN over Naira devaluation

President Muhammadu Buhari is unhappy with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, over what he called ruthless devaluation of the naira.”While speaking at the Ramadan breaking of fast with members of the business community ,on Monday, the president condemned “the ruthless devaluation of naira,’’ saying that he was yet to be convinced about the economic benefits of the exercise.

He said;
[ads-post]

How much benefits have we derived from naira devaluation in the past?

“I don’t like the returns I get from the CBN because that coupled with the demand that let us devalue the naira. In August 1985, the naira was N1.3k to a dollar, now you need N300 or N350 to a dollar.“What do we derive from that, how much benefit can we derive from this ruthless devaluation of the naira?“I’m not an economist neither a businessman, I fail to appreciate the economic explanation.“What has happened to us now is that we have maneuvered ourselves into a mono-economy which led to the collapse we are seeing now.“A lot of responsibilities now fall on your shoulders. You have a lot of investments, a lot of people you employ,’’ he told the businessmen.

Fayose statement after EFCC arrested his aid over N4.7bn fraud

Ekiti state Governor, Ayo Fayose’s aide/best friend , Abiodun Agbele has been arrested by the EFCC over allegations of aiding and abetting Fayose to launder part of the N4.7 billion he received from the Office of the former National Security Officer, Sambo Dasuki in June 2014.

EFCC is accusing Agbele of receiving N4.7 billion from former Minister of state for Defense, Musiliu Obankoro, and handing it over to Fayose. Agbele was arrested in Lagos last night and is being detained at the Lagos office of the antigraft agency.

Read Fayose’s statement;
Our attention has been drawn to the arrest of Mr. Abiodun Agbele by the EFCC and we wish to say that we encourage the EFCC to carry out its investigations without politics as it is being done now. It must be pointed out that at no time was Mr. Abiodun Agbele invited by the EFCC, and if he had been invited, he would have honored the invitation. Therefore, there is nothing to celebrate in his arrest if it is not political.
As already pointed out, Governor Ayodele Fayose does not have anything to do with any fund from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). He has stated how his election was funded and Zenith Bank that he said funded his election has not denied doing so.

[ads-post]

Also, the person said to have been arrested is an adult and will defend himself when the time comes. Subjecting him to media trial as EFCC has been doing since the inception of this government will only give our adversaries momentary sense of joy.

We await reports of EFCC investigations and we hope that the anti-corruption agency will be civil enough to allow an open and transparent trial in a competent court of law and not media trial just to get at Governor Fayose because of his uncompromising stance against the misrule of the APC/Buhari led federal government.

Whatever stories being circulated by the EFCC and its political allies can at best be regarded as a rumor as we were all in Nigeria when Nigerians were told that $700m cash was found in the House of Mrs. Diezani Allison Madueke and the story turned out to be a lie.

Finally, like we have maintained, Governor Fayose will remain resolute in making his opinions known on national issues and will not be intimidated.

Do not compare us with Boko haram as we are just fighting to leave Nigeria- Niger Delta Militants

Junaid Mohammed, a northern politician made a statement, describing the Niger Delta militants as terrorists like Boko Haram, one of the militant groups in the region, Niger Delta Sea Commandos (NDSC) has responded.

Major Osama Blatter, their spokesperson in a statement  said they weren’t terrorists but agitators calling for their rights.

He denied the claim that the militancy group was being funded by politicians while stressing that the group has nothing in common with an extremist group, Boko Haram.

[ads-post]
He said

“We commend Junaid for remembering that Boko Haram is a terrorist group, but we want to unequivocally tell the ethnic bigot that we are just agitators and not terrorists. Our activities and Boko Haram cannot be compared.”
“We are not deterred by the call by Junaid Mohammed because such calls will only facilitate the crumbling of Nigeria, which is what we are after. Junaid should be informed that we never begged to be appeased by Hausa/Fulani President, Muhammadu Buhari.”
“We are only fighting to leave Nigeria, which has enslaved and exploited us for too long. We are not sponsored by any politician, but it a civic duty required of us to liberate us people from slavery.”

Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, to vacate his office immediately, after finding him guilty of submitting false information to his party, the PDP during the party’s governorship primary in December 2014.

Pope Francis wants the church to apologize to gays

Pope Francis made this known on his way back from Armenia Sunday as he spoke to reporters on his plane.
The Pope was asked if he agreed with one of his top advisers, who said after the Orlando, Florida massacre that the Church should seek forgiveness from gay people for having marginalized them. This question was asked probably to tempt him, but he did it right.

[ads-post]

Pope Francis said: ‘I think that the Church not only should apologize  to a gay person whom it offended but it must also apologize to the poor as well, to the women who have been exploited, to children who have been exploited by being forced to work. It must apologize for having blessed so many weapons.’

The Church teaches that homosexual tendencies are not sinful but homosexual acts are and that homosexuals should en devour to be upright.

‘The questions is: if a person who has that condition, who has good will, and who looks for God, who are we to judge?’ he asked.

‘We Christians have to apologize for so many things, not just for this,’

‘But we must ask for forgiveness, not just apologize! Forgiveness! Lord, it is a word we forget so often!’ Pope Francis added.

Economic Situation is Affecting One-Chance Business - Lagos Robbers

According to one of the six one-chance robbery suspects arrested by operatives of Rapid Response Squad, in Lagos, the economic situation in the country is affecting business.

The gallant operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command in the Abule Egba area of the state, have arrested a  robbery suspect, Adeleke Rasaq, along with an accomplice, Lucky John, on Sunday.

Rasaq who is one of the suspects terrorising residents of Abule Egba, Agege, Fagba and Egbeda areas of the state before he met his Waterloo, said the harsh economic condition in the country had affected their operations, adding that there was no money in the country.

[ads-post]

Rasak, who resigned as a factory worker, confessed to the police that he became a ‘one-chance’ robbery to survive.

“John and I lived in Badagry. Every day, we go to Abule Egba, Agege, Fagba, Egbeda to operate. As soon as we make enough money, we retire for the day. I teamed up with John because picking people’s pockets is not easy. We had to team up to make more money to survive.
“We don’t make much money like before. The present economic condition in the country has greatly affected ‘one-chance’ robbery; everywhere is dry. Since Monday, we have been sharing N20,000, N30,000, and N40,000. Before, when I operate alone, I could make close to N150,000. Now, things are difficult,” he said.

Rasak said he resigned from the factory where he worked after he noticed that his friends in the Ajegunle area were living large. “It has been six years since I joined this gang. We don’t call it robbery, we call it hustling,” he added.

The RRS operatives also smashed another syndicate, which robbed two passengers in the Gbagada area of the state as members of the gang, Ubuke Michael, and Obinna Okoro, were arrested after their operational bus, had picked up the two passengers going to the Alaba International Market and Ladipo Spare Part Market to buy goods.

Ubuke, the leader of the gang, had allegedly invited a bus driver and a conductor to join the gang for the operation. “The driver and the conductor are familiar with the operation. I have so many commercial buses that I call for operations. I call them to join me at a particular location.

“The driver and the conductor would do their normal work while we collect belongings of the passengers before dropping them off. The two passengers in the bus were our victims that day.

“One of them came out of a bank before boarding our bus, while we noticed that the other had bulging pockets. We were about to collect their belongings when we were arrested. We don’t normally carry more than two passengers during operations. And whatever money we make, we share with the driver and the conductor; but our share is usually more.”

UK based Nigerian pastor jailed 9-years in Britain’s biggest ever education scam - pictures

A UK-based Nigerian Pastor and accountant, Sam Kayode has been jailed for nine years for stealing £4.1million of British taxpayers’ money and lavishing it on four women.

The 59-year-old time a part-time pastor spent the cash on his real wife, a second ‘wife’ and two alleged mistresses.

He bought luxury cars including a Mercedes, an Audi TT sports car, and an Infiniti, and is also feared to have sent much of the money to Nigeria.

Kayode blamed the theft on his late wife Grace and an office junior. He claimed they conspired to smear him by transferring the money to his joint account in revenge for his adultery. Kayode spent seven years looting the accounts of Haberdashers’ Aske’s state schools in south London, now an academy chain acclaimed by the Government.

Grace the deceased wife
During those years no questions were asked about the secretive man who locked himself in his office to work late, after arriving in a Mercedes, wearing £500 Gucci shoes and carrying a Louis Vuitton briefcase.

His boss, chief financial officer Paul Durgan, failed to notice a penny missing. He was often lecturing other schools about how to run their finances, while Kayode was transferring school money into his own bank account.

As well as spending money on his real wife Grace’s private health care – until her death aged 53, in 2013 – he also signed documents showing he was making investments with Miss Halima, and renting flats in Kent for ‘partners’ Toyin Lawal and Yetunde Turtak. His boss, chief financial officer Paul Durgan, failed to notice a penny missing. He was often lecturing other schools about how to run their finances, while Kayode was transferring school money into his own bank account.
