Lai Mohammed Explains How Boko Haram Carry Out Their Explosions Using Young Girls (Read)

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed who visited the headquarters of The Punch yesterday in Magboro, Ogun State, gave details of how Boko Haram men usually use young girls to carry out their violence activities without them really knowing. Hear him;

“Suicide bombers usually walk in threes. There is the man who leads. The leader will ensure that the small girl who is strapped with the bomb knows the road. The small girl never knows what she is carrying.

“She is simply told to go and deliver a parcel at a market. That leader would have taken her to the market days before to show her the direction of the market. On the day she is to deliver the package, the man will lead and by then she is strapped.

“Then there is another person that tails her from behind who will make sure that she doesn’t change her mind or turns in another direction. These bombs are detonated remotely. This is how cowardly these people are. These girls are not indoctrinated. Most of them don’t know what they are carrying. Some of them do it for as little as N5, 000 which is given to their parents.”

He however maintained that the Federal Government had largely won the war against insurgency.

Biafra: Nnamdi Kanu Apologises To Buhari, Jonathan, Igbo Elders

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra and founder of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed regret for referring to President Muhammadu Buhari as a terrorist, evil and a paedophile in his radio broadcasts.

Kanu, who has been charged along with two others by the Federal Government before a Federal High Court in Abuja on six counts of treason and other ancillary offences, said he intended to write a private letter to Buhari to express his apology to the President.

He also apologised to former President Goodluck Jonathan and Igbo elders for “some uncomplimentary things” he said about them.

The 48-year-old pro-Biafran agitation leader, who is, however, unapologetic about his demand for a Republic of Biafra, has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since his arrest in Lagos on October 14, 2015.

He tendered the apology for his comment against Buhari and others in a statement which he made to the DSS on October 23.

The prosecution, in its summary of the case, alleged that in one of the radio broadcasts by Kanu on August 1, 2015, he expressed his resolve to actualise the Republic of Biafra and “cast aspersions on the person and the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

The statement read in part, “Reference to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a terrorist, evil and a paedophile is regrettable and uncalled for and for that, I unreservedly apologise and will be doing so in a private letter to the President.

“Before PMB (President Muhammadu Buhari) there was the administration of Goodluck Jonathan. I also said uncomplimentary things about him and Igbo elders as well, which I now recognise should not have happened because it is un-African to be rude or insolent to elders.

“All I was trying to do is to draw attention to the problems afflicting society and something done about them.”

Kanu, who described himself as a Nigerian and a British citizen, justified his agitation for a Biafra Republic.

He said IPOB’s secessionist agenda was informed by the “incessant hardship, lack of holistic development in the socio-economic landscape of Nigeria, lack of youth employment, corruption in high offices and economic regression.”

He added that the agitation by IPOB, which, according to him, was founded in London in 2012 by a group of people from the South-South and South-East regions of the country, was in line with the United Nations Charter on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples ratified by African countries, including Nigeria.

In contrast to the counts of managing and assisting in the management of an unlawful society preferred against Kanu and two others, the Radio Biafra founder stated that IPOB, which the prosecution described as unlawful, was registered with the UN to pursue the rights of the people of Biafra.

He stated, “I can confirm that I, Nnamdi Kanu, is the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra worldwide as a legitimately and duly registered body at the United Nations pursuing the rights of a specific indigenous people, in this case, Biafra, to seek self determination according to the said charter.

“The reason for the formation of the Indigenous People of Biafra is to avail those referring to themselves as Biafrans the opportunity made available as a result of the United Nations declaration to seek the peaceful rebirth of Biafra in line with international law.”

Kanu, who is a son of a traditional ruler in Abia State, Sir I.O. Kanu, said he operated Radio Biafra, whose programmes “are designed to wake up the public from its slumber and address the issues of the time” because of his belief in free speech and freedom of expression.

He explained that the intended Biafra Republic comprised Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta states as well the Igbanke part of Edo State; Igala part of Kogi State and Idoma/Igede part of Edo State.

Apart from Kanu, one of the two other defendants in the six counts filed by the Federal Government is a Field Maintenance Engineer, David Nwawuisi, charged with the responsibility of maintaining MTN masts in Enugu State.

The other defendant, Benjamin Madubugwu, was said to be living in the Ubilisiuzo, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, where he allegedly received custody of a container, housing transmitters, from Kanu.

Interpol Hunts Man Who Killed Girlfriend On Christmas Day In Festac Lagos State

The Lagos State Police Command says it has contacted the International Police over a runaway murder suspect, identified only as Sunday, who allegedly stabbed his 21-year-old girlfriend, Cecilia Joseph, to death in the Festac Town area of the state.

Punch Metro learnt that the incident occurred on Friday, Christmas Day, in the lovers’ rented apartment on Waterside Street in the Lakeview Estate, Phase 2, in the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area.

It was learnt that the duo had a fight during which Sunday allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Joseph in the neck and in the stomach.

Neighbours, who learnt of the attack after Sunday had fled the house, were said to have reported the matter at the Festac Police Division.

It was learnt that the policemen came to the house and took Joseph to the Isolo General Hospital, where she was confirmed dead.

It was gathered that the bloodstained knife used by the suspect had also been recovered by the police.

A resident, who declined to give her name, said the duo had been living in the apartment without being married for some months before the incident happened.

She said, “There was a quarrel between them on the Christmas Day. I heard that it was the woman who first went to take the knife and attacked the man.

“The man then took the knife from her and stabbed her in the neck. It was her screams that alerted the neighbours. I think she had died before the police arrived. The man ran away before anyone took notice.”

Punch correspondent gathered that the matter had been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, where investigation was ongoing.

A police source said the suspect ran out of the country to the Benin Republic.

“The suspect is believed to have sustained knife injuries. He killed the lady in anger. He has escaped out of the country. The knife is with us and we also took photographs of the scene of the crime,” he added.

The Police Public Relations Officer, who confirmed the incident, said the Interpol section would be given the suspect’s details to aid their investigations.

He said, “We will look for the suspect and we will get him. The police have no jurisdictional problem even if the suspect has fled to the Benin Republic. Our Interpol section has been contacted.

“The details of the matter will be given to the Interpol, and we will arrest him where he is. Meanwhile, the corpse was taken to the Isolo General Hospital and deposited in a morgue there for an autopsy. Investigation is ongoing.”

A 60-year-old man has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl in Abigi community located in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of the State.

The Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed this to journalists, said the suspect committed the crime on Saturday.

“The police operatives attached to Abigi Division of the Ogun State police command have arrested one Adewale Enoch, 60, for having unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl, 12, on 26th December at 1540hrs,” he said.

Mr. Adejobi added that the suspect’s act was reported to the police by the father of the victim and the police arrested the man.

He said the commissioner of police, Abdulmajid Ali, had directed that the case be transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further Investigation and prosecution, as the command has credible evidence to arraign the suspect.

“The police boss also appealed to parents and guardians to monitor their children or wards as all hands must be on deck to eradicate this criminal, barbaric and inhuman act in our society,” the police spokesman said.

Photo: Bad Neighbour Bath Nursing Mom With Hot Water On Christmas Eve

A woman, Named Esther Williams, has been arrested by the Isheri division of the Lagos State Police Command for pouring hot water on her neighbour, Mabel Enwongomfon–Umoh, who is a nursing mother.

Williams, who is said to be in her late 30s, was said to have emptied a bucket of hot water on Mabel after they had a minor argument in their rented house on Thursday, December 24, 2015, around 8pm.

The incident left Mabel, who was still breastfeeding her two-month-old baby, with severe burns on many parts of her body, including her two breasts and abdomen.

Punch Metro gathered that the woman had not been able to breastfeed her baby since the incident happened.

The husband of the victim, who identified himself simply as Umoh, told Punch Metro that Williams attempted to escape after assaulting his wife, but he was able to apprehend and hand her over to the police.

Mabel, 27, who was evidently writhing in pains on the hospital bed when our correspondent visited, told Punch Metro that it was a fight between some of her co-tenants in front of her room that led to the incident.

She explained that Williams, who poured the water on her, had nothing to do with the quarrel.

She said, “My neighbour’s brother and his girlfriend were fighting and they pushed themselves to the front of my door. When I could not cope with the disturbance again, I went outside to call the guy’s sister to come and separate them or make them leave our entrance.

“As I was going back to my room, Williams, who had nothing with the fight, asked why I called the sister, saying I was interfering in something that did not concern me. I told her that they were fighting in front of my room, but she pushed me. I was surprised because we never had a quarrel before then.

“That was how we started shouting on each other.”

She recalled that it was the noise from the fight that drew the attention of her husband who was in the room with their two children. She said her husband came out to separate them and they were already going back to their apartment when Mabel ran into her room to carry the bucket of water and poured it on her.

She said, “I was in the front while my husband was behind me. Suddenly, she went into her room and came out with a bucket and poured the content on me.

“I have been in serious pain since then, and I have not been able to breastfeed my two-month-old baby, who is my second child.”

A police source told our correspondent that Williams had confessed to the crime and that she blamed the devil for the act.

“She would be charged to court,” the source said.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, said he would get back to our correspondent on the incident.

“Let me call the DPO of the division and get back to you,” he added.
