The Next Nigeria President Should Be An Igbo Man- Obasanjo Insist
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo Tuesday threw his weight behind the Southeast region to produce the next president of the country.
Obasanjo, who declared that his submissions were his personal view, stated that the problem of justice, marginalisation has been a major source of conflicts between ethnic and regional divisions in the country.
While speaking in Abeokuta, Ogun State when the leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Ogun State visited him, Obasanjo said it was part of what he resolved to do as a just and fair country that made him work for the emergence of a South-south president in 2009.
He said:
“But irrespective of the thinking of the people ahead of 2019, I personally think that South-east should have a go at the presidency too.”
He, therefore, said in the interest of justice and fairness, Ogun west senatorial district in Ogun state should be given the slot to produce the next governor of the state.
According to him, the same is happening here. If Ijebu and Egba have produced the governor, it is only fair and just to allow the Yewa or Ogun West to also produce the governor. Or else, one day, they will also stand up and take up arms against this injustice against them. That is my personal position on this.

Heritage Bank sacks 400 workers
HERITAGE BANK NIGERIA |
Reports indicate that at least 400 of its workforce have been laid off within January 2017.
The bank is still smarting from a series of crises, including a query by the Nigerian Stock Exchange over share-related issues and alleged loss of investment revenue from a business partnership with a consortium of enterprises on an agric-related business.
Reports in September 2016 said the bank’s involvement in the deal stood at about $150 million.
But a representive of the workers union, Kayide Adewusi, in a phone chat confirmed that some names of staff to be sacked were compiled from various branches.
He also alleged that there were cases of witch hunting as some of those affected had clean records.
A detail of the list showed that two management staff and five branch mangers would be involved.
“I can assure that we are going to fight this because most of the names are from Enterprise Bank staff, which Heritage Bank acquired in 2014. We won’t allow this to be,” the union leader stated.
When contacted, the bank’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Fela Ibidapo, said there were some exaggeration in the figures being bandied about.
“It is not only banking institutions that are retrenching staff, other organisatuons have been on it. So Heritage Bank should not be blackmailed,” Ibidapo said.
SHOCKING AS govt warns Nigerians Stay away from Bitcoin, Swisscoin, others,
cryptocurrencies |
In a circular issued at the weekend, SEC stated that crypto currencies such as Swisscoin, OneCoin, Bitcoin and such other virtual or digital currencies and their promoters have no legal standing in Nigeria to provide comfort for any investor.
The Commission stated that none of the persons, companies or entities promoting crypto currencies has been recognized or authorized by it or by other regulatory agencies in Nigeria to receive deposits from the public or to provide any investment or other financial services in or from Nigeria.
According to the Commission, the public should also be aware that any investment opportunities promoted by these persons, companies or entities are likely to be of a risky nature with a high risk of loss of money, whilst others may be outright fraudulent pyramid schemes.
“Given that these instruments and the persons, companies or entities that promote them have neither been authorised, nor any guidelines and regulations developed for them by any of the regulatory authorities in Nigeria, there is no protection available to users or investors in these virtual currencies from financial losses if the virtual currencies fail or the companies promoting them go out of business,” SEC stated.
The Commission urged the public and consumers of financial services to ascertain that the entity with whom the investment or transaction is being made is authorized by the Commission or other financial services regulatory authority as applicable to provide such services before making any financial commitment.

See How Osun State University Students Invested Their School Fees In MMM
He told told Saturday told Punch that students owe an estimated N2bn in school fees.
The professor said the institution would ensure that the undergraduates pay their tuition regardless of whether they are able to recoup their money from MMM.
He noted that the school’s registration portal would only be re-opened if many students pay their outstanding fees.
Popoola said:
“Some of them (students) used their school fees to invest in MMM. But whether MMM comes back or not, it is their headache. I have told them that we are not going to open the portal.
“If I see that a critical mass of the students pay, then we will decide to open the portal just for about 48 hours. But they must pay first.
“This is how we accumulated a debt profile of over N2bn, we cannot continue this way. They just have to pay the money.”

You Won’t Believe What Nnamdi Kanu Called Our President
Speaking before Binta Nyako, justice of the federal high court, Abuja, on Thursday, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, counsel to Kanu, said his client committed no crime by advocating self-determination for the Igbo.
He said the Biafra agitation predated the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, and that it was laughable that Kanu was accused of treason when all he did was ask for an independent state for the Igbo.
He, therefore, urged the court to quash the charges against his client.
“The Biafra agitation predates this present administration. The fact that the Honourable Justice Ademola decided that there was no incriminating evidence against the first defendants, he ordered his release but this was blatantly refused,” Ejiofor said.“He’s a freedom fighter unlike people who overthrew a legitimate government in 1983. The court has no option but to discharge the charges. The court should trash the charges.”
But Shuaibu Labaran, counsel to the federal government and the prosecution, urged the court to dismiss the application of the defence.
He said Kanu’s application to quash the charges against him lacked substance.
“We submit that the application has no substance, and should be discountenanced,” he said. “We urge your lordship to refuse the application.”
