That day  July 5, 1946, Louise Réard  designed that sexy outfit and  only had the problem of  finding a model brave enough to wear his invention. Behold nude dancer by the name of Micheline Bernardini  saved us today and our bikini by taking up the challenge of wearing it.

On July 11, 1946, Micheline became the first woman to wear a bikini, during a press show in Paris.

In 1951 the controversial item was banned following the first Miss World Contest in London. Declared sinful by the Vatican, it was soon banned in Belgium, Italy, Spain, and Austria.

Then the arrival of  French sex symbol Brigitte Bardot transformed  all that. Pictures of a gorgeous Brigitte  on the beach at the Cannes film festival in 1953, have been attributed to the bikini’s change of fortune.

It recorded a high number of sales which has been credited with doing more for French international trade than the car industry.
